I’m a 40 something chick from Richmond Virginia who has always dreamed of being an artist.
In college, like so many of us, I didn’t have the courage or parental support to study in a traditional studio art program. I took the safe route and got a degree in business and a double major in Art History. Then, life got busy. I got married, got a job, had children, became a stay at home mom, but I was always thinking in the back of my mind … create.
Lucky for me having two boys helped me find a creative focus … just not in the way I originally planned. Like most new moms I got a digital camera and a new artistic outlet.
I was hooked! My Dad and I took classes together and went on workshops … it was awesome. I seemed to have a knack for composition and the drive to learn all the technical skills needed … and boy can it be technical. Eventually, in 2009, I opened Elizabeth Miller Photography. I didn’t realize it at the time but I had become an artist!!
As the years have gone by and my boys have gotten older and more independent I’ve found myself thinking more and more about what I want to do in the future. I enjoy photography … but I really love painting. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. So, January of 2016, after reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, I psyched my self up and enrolled in an oil painting class at the VMFA.
Where this journey will take me I have no clue … but I can’t wait to find out.
